Requirements
- The Long Drive on Steam, switched to the beta build
named in the release notes(Steam → The Long Drive → Properties → Betas). - Windows 10 or 11.
- The same Roadworthy version for every player. The latest is on the releases page.
Other mods, extra game files and custom maps don't need to match. Only the game version and the Roadworthy version are checked.
Hosting
- Install Roadworthy.
- Start the game and host from the multiplayer menu as usual.
- Your lobby shows its Roadworthy version in the lobby browser, so friends can check they match.
Hosting removes rabbits from the world so guests don't freeze or get thrown by them. Rabbits that do spawn in multiplayer spawn around both the host and guests.
Joining
- Install the same Roadworthy version as the host.
- Open the server list and join the host's lobby.
- Wait for the world to load. You are placed once the ground under you has loaded, in a clear spot rather than inside a car or wall.
The game retries the Steam connection for up to a minute before giving up. Sending the world to you doesn't hold up other players.
What syncs between players
- Cars: position and speed, doors, windows, mirrors, seats, paint, damage and blood. Whoever drives owns the car.
- Passengers: car updates up to 60 times a second instead of about 5. Passengers stay in their seats.
- Players: movement 30 times a second instead of about 3.
- Items: parts, paint and loose cargo, including items in the glove box, cab and bed. Items held by other players stay in their hands.
- Trailers: hitched trailers follow whoever is driving.
- Other: cigarette smoke, wildlife and breakable objects.
Multiplayer settings
These are in Settings → Roadworthy.
- Car smoothing: smooths other players' cars. On by default.
- Faster multiplayer: the higher update rates above. Turn it off on a slow connection.
- New Buggy multiplayer: an experimental backend. Off by default. See below.
If a join fails
A message explains why, and you return to the server list. Common causes:
- Different Roadworthy versions. The message shows each player's version. Everyone installs the same release.
- Different game builds. Check the beta branch in Steam on every PC.
- One player has New Buggy multiplayer on. Players with it on can only join others who also have it on.
If it still fails, press F11 on both PCs to save a feedback bundle, then open an issue on GitHub with both bundles attached.
New Buggy multiplayer
A second multiplayer backend that hands each car, its fitted parts and its cargo between players as one unit, with one player in control of each car at a time. The host also shares door, part, paint, damage, fluid and breakable-object changes in order.
Choose it in Settings → Roadworthy before hosting or joining. Every player in the session needs the same setting. Once someone has joined, the setting is fixed until the session ends.
